Darren BufordWPA President
Darren Buford is the director of editorial, design, and digital strategy for Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals, Associated Skin Care Professionals, Associated Hair Professionals, and Associated Nail Professionals. He is also the editor of Body Sense magazine and the managing editor of Massage & Bodywork magazine and ASCP Skin Deep magazine. Darren has 16 years of experience in the publishing field, and the publications he works on have garnered 17 national magazine awards. He also serves on the planning and judging committees for Association Media & Publishing.
John BrooksWPA Treasurer | Secretary
John A. Brooks is the Director of Business Development at BPA Worldwide, with sales and account management responsibilities. John joined BPA Worldwide in October 1991, as a field auditor and has held management positions in Internal Auditing while directing the regional audit operations in the West, Midwest and Southern Regional Offices. In January 2001, John was promoted to Vice President, Member Relations. John left BPA in November 2001 and held management positions at Stark Services and PRIMEDIA’s Enthusiast Media before returning to BPA Worldwide in July 2007. John is a Past President of the Association for Audience Marketing Professionals and current Treasurer of the Western Publishing Association. John is a graduate of UCLA and currently resides in Santa Clarita, CA with his twin sons.
Jennifer Hamilton BingoWPA Vice President
Jennifer Hamilton Bingo is Associate Publisher, VIZ Media, a manga, anime and entertainment company in San Francisco. A senior media executive, she most recently was publisher of Oracle, Java and Profit magazines from 2012 -2017. Previously, she was associate publisher, production director, and sales director for Oracle Publishing Group. Prior to joining Oracle she was sales director for a Bay Area printing firm, and held production and management positions at a marketing agency. Jennifer has been a longstanding member of the Western Publishing Association and has served on the board for 2 years. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and daughter.
Norb GarrettImmediate Past President
Norb Garrett is Executive Vice President/General Manager of TEN: The Enthusiast Network’s Sports & Entertainment Group, which includes TEN’s action/adventure sports business featuring brands such as Surfer, Snowboarder, GrindTV.com, TransWorld Skateboarding and TransWorld Motocross as well as Baseball America and SLAM and TEN’s Home Tech Group. Since joining the company in 2010, Norb has overseen the acquisition and integration of the Grind Networks digital media group (October 2010) which includes a content partnership with GrindTV.com and Yahoo! Sports, the re-branding of the Action Sports Group into GrindMedia (July 2011), and the acquisition/integration of TransWorld Media (May 2013).
A 30-year veteran of the publishing industry, Mike Goldman is editorial director of the Boy Scouts of America’s three publications — Boys’ Life, Scouting, and Eagles’ Call magazines — with a total circulation of more 3 million in print and digital. Mike has served at every editorial level since starting with the BSA in 1994, becoming head of the magazines in 2012. After graduating from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Mike began his career on the sports desk of the late Dallas Times Herald newspaper before transitioning into the magazine realm, first with a regional gardening title and then with the BSA.
Joy Jacob, VP of Brand and Creative at Sprocket Media in Pasadena, CA, is an award-winning designer with more than 18 years of experience in marketing and design. Her love of typography, color, photography and illustrations enables her to create eye-catching layouts for both print and digital media. Joy’s passion for magazine design started at an early age. She would often have to explain to her mother why there were multiple stacks of magazines growing in each corner of her room. This led to her role as creative and design director for various publishing and media companies. She is also Founder of JoJo Creative Group, a design agency specializing in producing print and digital custom magazines, corporate marketing collateral material including ad design, ebooks, white papers, case studies, show guides, and website design. Her clients include Morgan Stanley, Oracle Corporation, The Los Angeles Times, L.A. Parent Magazine, Tiro Communications, Symantec Corporation, Curtco Media Group, Bonus Books, CMP Media, MacHome Magazine/Capp Media, MacWorld Magazine/IDG, Sun Microsystems, Weider Publishing and many more.
Brad McDonald is founder and CEO of online publisher, Vital Media Network. Vital’s properties include VitalMTB.com, VitalMX.com and VitalBMX.com A veteran of action sports media, Brad got his start in the business as a photographer, shooting for various editorial and commercial clients. In 1992, he launched Ride BMX magazine, followed by Snap magazine in 1994. Both titles were sold to Times Mirror Magazines/TransWorld Media in 1998. In his subsequent eight years with TransWorld, he launched TransWorld Motocross and Quad magazines, and rose to the position of Group Publisher. Seeing the dramatic shift among consumers toward online media, Brad left TransWorld in early 2006 to launch Vital Media Network.
Juan Morales is senior director, membership publications, for the Television Academy and editor in chief of emmy magazine. He is responsible for all editorial, production, circulation and advertising sales for the magazine, as well as the Academy’s many other publications. Previously, he served as editor in chief of Detour magazine, editorial director of Movieline magazine and executive editor of E! Online. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, In Style, Entertainment Weekly, Harper’s Bazaar, Redbook and many other publications. He graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Film & Television Studies.
Christopher Schulz is the President and Publisher of Orange Coast magazine. Previous publishing positions include: President of Gulfshore Life, a division of CurtCo Robb Media; Group Publisher at Firebrand Media; VP and Group Publisher at Freedom Orange County Information; President of World Trade Media Group; along with stints at Reed Elsevier, Murdoch Magazines, and Ziff-Davis. Chris served as President of the WPA as well as a Director.
Stephanie Yaggy LaveryDirector
Stephanie Yaggy Lavery is Editorial Director of Creative Age Publications and the Executive Editor of leading trade publication, Nailpro. As a leading source of nail and beauty news, Stephanie is at the forefront of new products and trends for both the professional and consumer. With more than 15 years of experience in beauty journalism, from consumer to trade, she is an expert in issues that surround the nail industry. She has been quoted in The New York Times, Shop Smart Magazine, Refinery29.com, TheDailyMakeover.com and Crain’s New York, among others. She has also been interviewed as a nail expert for The Cut/NYMag.com, Access Hollywood, Fox5 San Diego and Fox5 Las Vegas, the Associated Press, and the CBS Evening News. Stephanie has been a guest judge on Oxygen network’s “Nail’d It” reality nail competition series in December 2014.

Ron Epstein is the immediate past president of the WPA and has served on the Board of Directors since 2000. Following a 20-year career in which he managed consumer, controlled circulation and academic publishing divisions, Ron started his own business with his wife in 2012 and is now the publisher of L.A. Parent (www.laparent.com) and the owner of the National Parenting Publications Awards program (www.nappaawards.com).

Debi LeibovitzOur Executive Director
Debi Leibovitz is the new Executive Director of the WPA. With more than 30 years in publishing, she has held executive positions at the largest magazine publishers in the world including Bertlesmann, Time, Inc. and Conde Nast. She left print for digital marketing and was VP of Advertising & Promotions at Cooking.com, CEO and Founder of her own consultancy, REPertoire, Managing Director at Datran Media and VP of Advertising at Captivate Network.
